CAPS has made admission process more transparent – Unilorin admission officer

The Chief Admission Officer, University of Ilorin, Mrs Zakariyya M.B. has commended the Central Admission Processing System (C.A.P.S), in an exclusive interview with UCJ, Unilorin.

According to the Chief Admissions Officer of the University of Ilorin, -Mrs Zakariyya M.B. "The C.A.P.S. has further made the admission process more transparent, a source of data for research, reference and much faster. It has aided the exclusion of the former practice of forwarding hard copies from one state to another'.

She further stated that, " The admission process for this year is officially closed. All admissions ended at Twelve midnight of Thursday, the 25th of January 2018. However, the only basis for more admissions is if JAMB officially extends the official time stipulated for the admission process."

Zakariyya emphasised on the fact that the Admissions Office does not formulate policies for admission. However, the office is in charge of the implementation of Senate-decisions as passed down to the unit through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (academics). "The admission office proposes the candidates for admission, screens them and makes sure they have all that is required to be admitted," she added.

She further stated that, the screening process is a two-way or mutual process. "The candidates actually provide sufficient information to guide the committee (Admissions Unit) in approving their respective courses. However, if the candidate provides a wrong, invalid or inadequate information, then, the screening process helps in asserting the veracity of what the candidate has submitted. Interestingly, if the unit for any reason makes a mistake during the process, the screening procedures ensure that things are properly done."

The admission officer stated that, for candidates or students who have been admitted but are still having screening issues like for instance; blank portal pages, no reason given and many more, according to the Chief Admissions Officer, "the HELP DESK option on your portals was created for this purpose." Kindly, make your complaints and it would be received and worked upon.

The newly introduced C.A.P.S is envisioned to solve the many challenges associated with admissions into higher institutions in Nigeria. According to the the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the objective of the Central Admission Processing System is to address current Challenges associated with admissions in tertiary institutions, deliver benefits of automation, and offer significant innovations.

The admission process this academic year has turned out totally to be a complex process, causing a drift, unlike the previous years in which a less complex processes were involved. This drift was facilitated through the Central Admission Processing System also known as C.A.P.S. which was brought about by the registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, -Professor Ishaq Oloyede.

The admissions office of the University of Ilorin is the custodian of the requirements for admission into the university, the office gives interpretation on the requirements and provides adequate guidance on what the candidate needs to do during the admission process.
