Arsenal were gifted the upper hand before the game had barely started when Sime Vrsaljko was given his marching orders for two yellow cards in the opening nine minutes, at Arsene Wenger's last home game for the club after 22years as the longest serving manager in the English topflight.

Manager Diego Simeone quickly followed him down the tunnel for his remonstrations on the touchline.

However, it did take until the start of the second half for Arsenal to take the lead, with Lacazette jumping above his rivals to head home from eight yards out.

But Griezmann out-muscled Koscielny before prodding home with his second bite of the cherry to put the tie back in Atletico's hands.

The game ended 1-1 at the emirates stadium at England, Arsenal was fantastic throughout the game, but, the defensive mishap by skipper Laurant koscienly cost them a risk of an away Goal.

The second leg that would determine who would make the final is next week at Spain.

Some members of the Senate have asked that the process to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari be started, for failing to get the approval for the withdrawal of $496m from the Excess Crude Account to purchase military aircraft.

Senator Mathew Uroghide, who moved a motion at the plenary on Thursday, specifically urged ‎resident of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, to allow the chamber to invoke Section 143 of the Constitution.

Uroghide stated that the President had breached Section 80 of the Constitution which stipulates that all government’s spending must be appropriated by the legislature. Also, Senator Chukwuka Utazi stated that it was time for the legislature to be decisive.

Saraki had on Wednesday read a letter from Buhari ‎in which the President disclosed that the money had been withdrawn and paid to the United States for the 12 Super Tucano aircraft, ahead of legislative approval. This, he said, was done to beat the deadline for the arms deal. The planes will be delivered in 2020. Senator Shehu Sani has described the expenditure as “a gross abuse of the Constitution.”

Shehu Sani, the senator representing Kaduna Central, has said that the much-acclaimed integrity of President Muhammadu Buhari is not enough as a leadership virtue for tackling the various challenges confronting Nigeria.

The senator, who was speaking at the 80th posthumous birthday event of legal luminary and activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi on Sunday, said though the president is a man of integrity, one man integrity cannot salvage Nigeria from corruption.

He said: “You cannot lead a country because of the integrity of one person. The integrity of one person is not enough to sustain a nation. You need a chariot that is driven by set of principles, set of revolutionary ideas. “We have a president who is a man of integrity, but integrity is not enough for leadership. Leadership requires all other virtues and qualities.

The lawmaker urged Nigerians never to vote for people based on political affiliation but to look out for individuals with qualities that would best serve the progress of Nigeria. He added that Nigeria is not yet at the promised land as those who have misled the country are yet again presenting themselves to the people.

  • SU President Speaks On Insecurity on Campus.

In an exclusive interview with UCJ Unilorin, the Student Union President of the university states the concerns, causes, challenges and solutions to the issue of insecurity on and off campus.
He states that inadequate police personnel off campus and the age of securities on campus are causes of insecurity and incessant attacks on students of the university.

UCJ: What's your take on insecurity generally?

Reedof: I am not pleased with recent happenings on campus. When you look at the way students complain bitterly in recent days over the issue of insecurity both on campus  and off campus.  But as a matter of fact the issue off campus is very wide, because Tanke community is big and it keeps developing day in day out, one of the challenge I think we are having in Tanke is owing to the fact that we have just a division (f division) covering the whole of tanke, that is equivalent to a local government so it's challenging.

We have less number of police and when you look at the number of people in Tanke today, they are nothing less than a hundred thousand if I am not mistaken, because students in Tanke alone are more than 25,000 coupled with those that reside there.  When we have a large number of people residing in a particular area like Tanke community, a congested area, there would definitely be people that would perpetrate evil, hiding under the population, and don't forget that evil start with a mindset before it integrate into the group then they start executing their plan.  So if there is a good working security measure in place, that should have relieved the university of the burden Off campus. But as it is what we are just clamouring for is for the state government to step up the number of personal that works in F division so that they will be able to protect lives and property.

UCJ: You mentioned that the state government should step up the number of personnel,  what step have you taken to ensure this is executed?

Reedof: We have met with the commissioner of policeman's we were made to realise that recruitment is not something that can just be done suddenly or at the discretion of the commission,  it is something that is done nationally and it is seasonal.  There is a particular time for to recruit and when the time comes, they would definitely do so. Our prayer now is for the time to come on time so that they can get more personnel in other to step up the standard and coverage of F division.

Digressing to campus, in recent days we are not happy with happenings but we thank God that lately things are getting better than what triggered the action of the Students Union to have an indoor security meeting. When the issue was becoming rampant, we saw the need to ensure the issue is relieved to the barest minimum or totally eradicated.  We had to make some moves, we first understand and examined the causes of insecurity. If you will agree with me most of the people that perpetrate evil hide under darkness. Wherever is dark,  people tend to hide and wait for students to come so they can perpetrate evil act.

Secondly,  we realized that our students fail to work in group. You know even if you are walking at night but you are in group, it becomes scary for those who want to approach them.

Also we realise the security strength of the campus is beyond what our security personnel can handle so during our close door meeting we also came up with the resolution of engaging the paramilitary group,( man o' war and cadet) to embark on night patrol. People can attest to the manifestation in fact, not quite long they caught a culprit around Arafims hostel and students' property were recovered. So it has shown the effect and the result that has been yielded, so on the issue of illumination the Union has taken steps to ensure that we have proper lighting on our campus particularly in the night and that was what triggered our movement to go outside the four Walls of the university to sought for people that can do that for us. I can show you evidence of the approved letter to bring more light into the university and where it will be positioned will be determined by the Union.

We don't want to rely solely on the university management alone, though we know it's their responsibility but we don't want to hide under the fact that they are facing some challenges but we believe if we can go out there to sought for aid will consolidate what the university Management is doing.

UCJ: Do you think walking in group would actually be the solution to the problem Of insecurity?

Reedof: of course I highlighted about three causes of the problem and the fact that we have sat and identified a particular problem, that means it's one of the issue. It cannot be totally eradicated that's why illumination and engagement of paramillitary group as part of attachment. We believe if these things are put in place insecurity will be reduced to the barest or even eradicated. Just 3-day ago a guy was caught in the university hostel, particularly compound D, Lagos hostel for theft but the student was apprehended and handed over to the security personnel.

UCJ: A guy in girls hostel, how do you think this was possible, is it owing to inefficiency of those in charge?

Reedof: I cannot fault those in charge that's why I always say that the best security measure we should put in place is to be conscious. If not for their consciousness the guy would have escaped. Actually the issue is this, we have just a singular entry leading to the hostel and don't forget we have a whole lot of fences surrounding the hostel. People can take the risk of jumping through the fence. It's not a fault on the part of the portal what I think what we just need to encourage is for the university to set fence wire across the hostel so no one would be able to jump the fence.

UCJ: Do you think girls are more liable to be attacked than guys, what has the union done to avoid female vulnerability?

Reedof: One of the campaign is not to walk alone. Secondly, realising the root for which those guys plan to attack a female student, particularly in Zamfara hostel, in compound D or C. So we approached the security unit to provide us with security personnel that will be stationed in the area in the night and for this we have not been hearing report and we have no record of such again that shows how conscious the union is towards the security of lives and property of our members.

UCJ: It has come to our notice that guys loiter around girls hostel and this create panic for female students as they are afraid of being raped as the case around Arafims hostel last session. What has the Union put in place to curb this?

Reedof: You will notice that the area the incidence occurred lacked proper lighting.  We have strong conviction that if the issue of lighting is being step up the security strength of that area will be much more better,  that is for private hostel. But talking of the likes of Lagos hostel,  Zamfara... I see no reason why females should be afraid in fact it is a tradition in our campus, to see guys around but not in the hostel.  You cannot infringe on their fundamental human right to walk in the university hostel,  if the university comes up with the regulations that no boy should be found around girls hostel another confusion will come up that Unilorin is a glorified secondary School.

UCJ: Trends show that most theft are carried out when students are busy with examination in the hall,(be it cut or written). What step has the sun taken to eliminate such?

Reedof: It is clearly expressed in the student hand book that students should go into the examination hall with only writing materials.  If that be the case my advice to fellow unilorites is that we should only go into the examination hall with our writing materials and not with properties like phones, laptops... That if stolen will be detrimental to them so that we won't create unnecessary opportunity for them to exploit us.

UCJ: Why do we lack functional CCTV cameras in our lecture halls?  Don't you think installing CCTV will reduce theft on campus?

Reedof: It's a security matter not meant for public consumption yet but as we speak,  the university is making effort to install CCTV in strategic location.

UCJ: What do you mean it's not meant for public consumption?

Reedof: I mean it's an information I won't like to give you with regards to what you say,  because I won't like a situation where I will say they are working on it and eventually it doesn't happen. It will portray me as a liar so all I will say is that the university is working  tirelessly to ensure they install CCTV across strategic places in the university.

UCJ: How would you rate the security unit?

Reedof: I wouldn't want to rate with a specific figure but all I will say is that, when it comes to alacricious response, they have been perfect,  alatrocious in the sense that as I am here if I call the unit to say security we need your attention I'm the park,  within three minutes,  they are here,  it shows how responsive they are,  and their concern for students matter is a primary responsibility.

So as a matter of fact,  they have been doing their best but nonetheless we can still have the better of the best. However there Is no way they wouldn't have short comings,  what I see as their primary short comings is one, old age and secondly,  they need more personnel and I think the university management are working tireless on that and in due time I hope they get more personnel.

UCJ: Who would you blame for the rampant insecurity?

Reedof: Permit me not to blame anybody but we all have roles to play towards security of our lives and property as students,  we need to be conscious oof our environment and as mentioned earlier, be a Liverpool fan, what do I mean by that,  do not walk alone so that when those with evil intentions see us they would be discouraged. On the part of the university management and security unit,  they also have roles to play by stepping up the number of personnel and also illuminating the university campus as there is a popular saying of our father that "oru lan Seka", when those people see there is no light,  they will always take undue advantage.

UCJ: Word of advice to night readers?

Reedof : Don'ot walk alone and be conscious security wise.

Have you been to shops and  buy things and they tell you no change? Been to canteens to eat and they said no change? Or acquired any service and they said no change? Don't you find it vexing enough? But can we blame them?

 Yes and no!

Well, the reasons for this exasperating dilemma isn't far fetched. The slim fitted Nigerian economy which is voraciously catapulting the lower denominations into extinction is a main rationale behind the quagmire.

In the Nigerian society, #5 and #10 are now mere currencies with absolutely ameliorated power. #5 can get nothing while the latter can get just a sachet water or a candy. For a currency that was once  powerful than the US dollar, it's saddening.

Our banks are not making issues any better. A large percentage of the public who makes use of Banks withdraw through the Automatic Teller Machine. The Machine dispenses mostly #1000 ,then #500 sometimes.#200 is very rare  to get dispensed through ATMs. Which automatically brings an imbalance in the circulation of currency denominations in the county. Instead of dispensing the big boys, we need to start getting smaller denominations from  Banks.

The state of our #100 notes are an eyesore. You're presented an #100 note and you'll almost feel like dashing the person the change. A lot are dirty, torn etc especially the unneeded centenary note printed during the Jonathan administration.

We do not only need revolution in the leadership style. Our currency also needs revolution. Apart from the fact that the value of our currency compared to the good old days is like a goat and a cow respectively, we also need to gain some respect for our currency by having presentable currencies.

Even banks dispense dirty notes sometimes. What makes is worse is the air conditioner conditioning the germs. Let's save our currencies. Let's end the "No change" mantra.
But how do we end it?

We need to visit the roots of the problem.  Why do we have the bigger boys in circulation. There's no other reason than the slim fitted economy. Once again, before we can tackle the slim fitted economy, we have to trace the roots of the problem. What's the rationale behind our poor fate??

We have a lot of reasons but I'll like to discuss just two because as a mass communicator, I need to consider the convenience of my audience. They are, the monopoly of the Nigerian economy and lack of scale of preference.

There is a popular saying that goes thus; "those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Nigeria has failed to learn from history.

Economically and Politically, Nigeria is a microcosm or should I say a larger version of the  great Old Oyo Empire (limiting the scope to Africa). The Old Oyo Empire made economic blunders which led to it's economic recession, downfall and political apocalypse.
At the peak of its expansion, Oyo relied on the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade with Dahomey and Badagry being main slave ports under the feets of the Alaafin.

However, this business turned out to be lucrative for the empire that they monopolised the economy. Slave trade was the real deal.
However, they started counting their losses in the 1770s when Lord Mansfield passed a judgement that abloished slave trade in the British Empire (which America was part of). It was too late for Oyo to shift focus to another source of revenue. Revenue stopped flowing into the government's purse and eventually, vassal states started to break away.

The center wasn't able to afford the strong military Orompoto started. The Calvary force was gone . It went on and on till the capital was finished off by the Fulanis. Now, if they hadn't put all their eggs in one basket, probably, Oyo might have been a country today.
Nigeria is threading the same path. It's crude oil this time around. Although, President Buhari is making the shift but I feel he is being sluggish with it. He needs to accelerate faster.

There are approximately 7 billion people in the world. Not all 7 billion people need crude oil products to survive but I can assure you  99.999 percent of that population needs agricultural products to survive. Then, why can't we tap this opportunity???

Hectares of land keep wasting. Let's employ these lands. Cultivate and export. This would only not increase revenue but reduce unemployment rate.

When export increases, the Naira begins to gain value and the small boys like #50 downwards begin to grow up. They begin to matter in the society. They stop being nonentities, they stop being rejects of beggars. I also promised to talk on lack of scale of preference.

What we purchase determines the fate of the economy. A country that doesn't have a scale of preference is doomed. Let me use Kwara State for an example. For those that stay in Ilorin, the construction works going at Garin - Alimi shouldn't be a strange thing to you. However, we all need to know that in Nigeria, only Lagos State doesn't owe salaries.

Therefore, Kwara is owing workers salary.
That should be paramount in the mind of any sane leader which is to make sure his people are well fed. How would hungry people appreciate a project? Have we forgotten that a hungry man is an angry man? The government should learn to priotise only things that are meant to be a priority.

Same with Nigeria, the lower class in the classy Nigerian society has increased in poverty rates. Rather, what our esteemed senators are interested in is purchasing new cars. Pressing for car allowance.

Recently, over $460m was used to purchase helicopters by the Minister of Defence and Minister of Finance without the approval of the Senate. I'm so sure these helicopters are probably used for over 20  years already by the sellers.

If $460m was pumped into the economy and we have more cash in circulation, I can assure that prices would drop, which automatically increases monetary value. This means the small boys gain recognition again.

I was viewing a facebook page with an historical scope last week and I saw an old #1 note. I laughed so hard then I cascaded into a lugubrious ambience when I ruminated on how the country has been downgraded.

What we need in Nigeria now is necessarily not a young president but a president with sense and vision. Someone with realistic ideas not someone that doesn't have idea how being in a political post is contesting for President. This is no time for experiment.

Let's all get our Perman Voters Cards and turn the fate of this country around.

The Federal Government has concluded the demolition of buildings erected illegally on oil pipelines belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) at the Tanke area in Ilorin, Kwara State.

UCJ UNILORIN gathered that the exercise lasted from 3rd to 7th April in the Tanke area of the state, while that of an area known as Okeoyi was said to have been carried out about two weeks earlier.

Armed with soldiers in order to ensure compliance, the NNPC team bulldozed every structure that stood on their way.  Private residences, schools, shops, police station, market place, and religious institutions all had aspects of their edifices brought down to a rubble by the destructive spree.

We also gathered that the soldiers hired to enforce the law didn't allow onlookers to take photographs of the exercise. In fact, a female journalist reporting for the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) was allegedly restricted from covering the event and harassed by the trigger-happy khaki boys.

Furthermore, the action was said to have been taken after the expiration of a purported 7-day ultimatum given by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

From our findings however, we learnt that a similar notice had been given by the Federal Government about 8 years ago, to the effect that property owners should take down their buildings in the designated area that violated the 5 metre rule.

Unfortunately, the warnings seemed to have fallen on deaf ears due largely to a perceived lack of political will on the part of the Federal government to make good its threat. To that end, the most recent 7 days ultimatum given, was backed up by action which led to the demolition exercise.

One of the victims simply referred to as Gbenga Ibiloye, gives an account of what happened. "The first day they came, them put mark. Them give us just a week. So they mark everywhere...that we should quit out. After that one week, they came and demolish everywhere including my shop...", he narrated.

In his account, Usman Adam, an eyewitness and resident of the affected area, however blames both the government and the people for the ugly situation. In his words: "As a matter of fact, government has its own fault, and the people too, have their own fault. Because, there's no way you'll build on pipeline and you take the plan to the Town Planning, and they will not tell you that you're building on pipeline. People will still insist that the government will not come now...after all, for the past ten years, they did not do anything. Don't worry, just help us do it. We'll find our way. We would have even made our money before they come. So, most of them know they're on pipeline...

"So, Town Planning did not do their job very well. They should not have even compromised of helping them or taking any money from them to approve their plan on the building that encroach five metres on pipeline", he concluded.

Another victim who pleaded anonymity, was one of the opinion that the timing for the action was wrong in view of the harsh living conditions of the people. "This is not a good period for this. It's a right thing at a wrong time. The political timing is wrong. The timing is wrong politically. The timing is wrong economically. The timing is even wrong spiritually because people at the lower ebb are feeding from the dustbin", he lamented.

As at the time of compiling this report, all efforts to get the Director, Kwara State Town Planning Authority, Mr Adeoti, to respond to the allegation of issuing temporary approval for buildings erected on pipelines, was frustrated. Rather than answering the question via voice calls on two occasions, he resorted to intimidation, and eventually hung up evasively.

At the first attempt last Sunday, Mr Adeoti queried our correspondent for engaging him on a non-working day, saying our correspondent should do the right thing impliedly. The next day, a similar effort was made but he further queried the medium used by our correspondent as inappropriate and hung up like he did previously.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Kwara State Governor on Media and Publicity, Dr Muyideen Femi Akorede, was also contacted by our correspondent.

When asked if the Kwara State government was aware of the demolition exercise, Dr Muyideen Femi Akorede, said: "The report has come to us and apparently it's been done by NNPC".

Dr Akorede further stated that the state government was not aware of the 7 days notice. However, he disclosed to our correspondent that the government knew about the demolished houses.

"No I'm not (as regards the 7-days notice). The only thing I'm aware of is that houses were demolished and all that...I don't know what kind of communication went on between the NNPC and the owners of those shops", he disclosed.

When asked if the Kwara state government was aware of the Temporary Approval issued by the Town Planning Authority, he said: "Well, as far as I'm aware, the government does not issue temporary approval. It's either your house is approved or not. Another thing is, why didn't they go for permanent approval before they started building? Assuming they got temporary approval, if they had gone for the final one, I'm sure it would have been rejected... That place belongs to NNPC", he emphasised.

Cast: Coco Ice, Olumide Oworu, Eghosa Oyegun, Afolayan Ifedayo, Fajenyo Mubarak

Story writer and Director: Hassan Ahmed

Synopsis: After the trailer teaser has been released with the clause: The Caterpillar is about to change forever, the trailer drops with an unnamed guy running to meet some guys already waiting for him like they were on a kill command. Some ladies on a straight line like an induction orientation ground. Another scene of an uproar that made Olumide Oworu dumb of what to do, and ending with two imbeciles miming the tune of the background music. Then: The cocoon seems desolate, and its glory is the emerging butterfly. Welcome to Morphe, the movie.

Trailer Review: Hassan Ahmed showcases another adrenaline-filled, comical trailer to the world. New actors with few known ones but with a totally distinct script put to play. The trailer moved the audience with its scenic transitions.

The youth-filled movie reveals crisis as a part of this generation, which only a counter hegemony operations can pave way for survival. As Mubarak swipes scenes from laughing in a restaurant to receiving strokes of cane in school and cool Olumide Oworu been almost torn apart in a center attack, there seems to be no escape route from violence.

The teaser has wet the ground, hence the trailer was very much anticipated and it also created more hunger for the full movie with the excellence put to play in the direction of photography and the actors and actresses expertise. The trailer served as a great suspense-filled entertainment with its colorful scenes and plot twists. Hassan used actors in a unique way to create actions of blockbuster hit movies like the mechanic resurrection. Every actor seems like a star.

The background music flows with the trailer’s pace. After a few scenes however, it is convincing that the casting was a good one. There was few times when the trailer seems a bit drawn out, but the gorgeous action scenes stimulate the audience attention and kept them on the edge of their seats. Being a unique trailer, as I would call it, one can’t really give head light to the story itself; a success on the path of the creator, even though some people might desire a lead into the story.
Despite the trailer’s minor shortcomings, it’s exciting, creative and worth few seconds of your time. Anticipate the full movie, premieres at metamorphosis.

A man said to be in his early fifties has allegedly raped a 14 year old minor on Ayantola street, situated at Temidire community in the Gaa Akanbi area of Ilorin, Kwara state.

The suspect, simply referred to as Mr Ayeni, is said to be at large since the alleged crime took place.

UCJ UNILORIN gathered from a reliable source that the purported act would be the fifth time the suspect would take advantage of the victim who is currently in a state of trauma as a result of the ugly incidence.

"The girl could not talk. But when she was taken to the police station, she told the policemen that, that was the fifth time the man rapped her", the source said.

While probing the victim's silence over the alleged repeated act towards her, our source further revealed that the suspect was fond of using fetish means and threats to have his way.

"He would tell her to follow him that he wants to show her something, but she didn't use to know any time she follows him and when she comes to her real senses, he threatened her not to tell anybody. She is really affected psychologically. They just noticed that in the way she does recently", the person said.

Another source also disclosed to UCJ UNILORIN that all efforts to take the victim to the hospital for medical attention was halted by the victim's family church General Overseer.

In addition, the General Overseer was reported to have told the police officers at the A Division Police Station, Ilorin, that the alleged act was not a case of rape but a pre-arranged action between the suspect and the victim.

In the person's words: "They wanted to take her to the hospital but the G.O of their church said they shouldn't take her to the hospital. The G.O went to the police station and tell the police that the girl and the man planned it, that it's not rape".

Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ajayi Okasanmi has decried lack of adequate crime combating apparatus, under-staffing, gap in communication among others as banes to safety in the state.

He said this in an interview with NTA Ilorin, on “Morning Safari," where he stated that the problems caused by inadequate facilities have hampered proper policing of global standard in the state.

"We have a long way to go but then the Government is trying and Police force is not relenting too towards ensuring  the security of life and property in the State," he said.

He further described the attitude of people in crime scene from taking pictures to recording videos as worrisome.

While imploring people to concentrate on information gathering for the police, he said, "Police are not magician, we based our works on reports, eyewitness accounts and intelligence, so rather than focusing on taking pictures and videos for social media, why not for additional information to the police." This will go along way in investigation, he added.

Reacting to question on research and deployment of technology in carrying out investigation on the robbery incidence in Offa, he stated that, the police will leave no stone unturned and he urge the people to give the police the benefit of doubt while pleading to Government at all level to allocate funds for procurement of necessary state and technological apparatus.

He further enthused, "The force is a non-profit organization and securing lives and property is a serious business that needs serious funding so I think the authorities concerned will in due time do the needful and we will get to the global standard of policing."

The department of Mass Communication Unilorin, hosted CEO, Image Merchant Promotion, Mr. Yushau Shuaib, a Public Relations icon from Abuja.
The Head of Department, Dr. (Mrs) S.S Abdulbaqi, referred to the session as an extension of the Students Veteran Interaction (SVI) held on Advertising and journalism.
Mr. Yushau in his speech, explained the concept of journalism, the social media and public relations.

According to him, "journalism deals with information, entertaining and education". Education and enlightment should be the basis of Journalism, as one of its essential principles, he said.

Mr. Yushau enthused that, a journalist must be fair and objective in his writing, humane and not leave out sympathy in his work."

He criticised the lackadaisical nature of some journalists in addressing sensitive societal issues and the importance of constructive criticism in mobilizing change in national issues; as in the case of the abducted Dapchi girls by the Boko Haram terrorists.

Mr. Yushau emphasised, "We are in a paradise of communication," while referring to how the social media has provided a very easy and relaxing arena for interpersonal and mass communication. Although ridden with its own disadvantages, the social media is nevertheless, "a reliable platform for information, as regards the issues of the nation and can be used to avert crisis and propagate timely responses from the masses. This depending on the right social media source," he said.

He declared that, "there's power in the social media, as the keyboard is now mightier than the sword, and not the pen any longer."
The media icon also cleared doubts and stereotypes about P.R personnels. "PR people are not propagandists. A professionally trained public relations expert is not a propagandist but one who mediates issues between two persons, especially those of societal recognition. They dwell on facts and not sentiments," he explained.
According to him, public relations expert could also be a crisis communicator who uses lobbying as a tool for justice and not propaganda.

More so, he presented his book: "An Encounter With The Spymaster," to the H. O. D of Mass Communication and the Association of Mass Communication Students, which was said will be made available in the departmental library for retrieval.

The department of Mass Communication, University of Ilorin, has held an interactive session with the CEO, Image Merchant Promotion, Mr. Yushau A. Shuaib.

According to the Head of the Department, Dr. (Mrs) S.S Abdulbaqi, the interactive session served as an extension of the Student Veteran Interaction (SVI) held on advertising with Mr. Bolaji Alausa, the Creative Director, Noah’s Ark Communication and other prominent journalist.

Mr Yushau in his lecture, explained three concepts, which include journalism, social media and public relations. According to him, understanding these concepts is key to attain success in Mass Communication.

He stated education, constructive criticism, among others as goals of journalism and truthfulness, accountability, humanity among others as principles of journalism. "Humanity is one principle that people tend to forget is part of journalism", he said.

Mr Yushau opined that, the power of media lies in the social media. He identified sharing as the most important and most dangerous aspect of social media. "It is important, because that is how people get informed, and it is dangerous because a little mistake in what to share or who to share to can destroy a person’s life," he added.

The public relations expert said, “Public Relations is about establishing and sustaining beneficial mutual relationship between an organization and the public”.

He added that, for one to be a good public relations officer, one must have the basic knowledge of journalism. The person also needs to be good in; spoken words, so as to represent the organisation well; written words, in order to write good publications for the organisation; and crisis management, in case the organization is faced with negative unexpected happenings, he said.

Yushau stated the difference between propaganda and public relations. According to him, "white propaganda" is a PR tool and is different from propaganda.

He further urged the students to continue to make the department and the university proud as he has seen their tremendous achievement in the just concluded YouthsDigest campus award.

However, he mentioned the fact that the internet is one of  the most reliable sources of information nowadays. According to him, a considerable amount of people go online to seek information. "The power is in the social media," he said.

He educated the students on the intricacies, functions, job opportunities offered and the qualities a PR Practitioner must possess, while he explained that, money shouldn't be the drive, passion should be, emphasizing the importance of persistence and passion.

Convener of the programme; Abdullahi Abdulhakeem Ago

Student Union President, Reedof, other stakeholders of the Union stormed an academic seminar "Beyond Matriculation," which held at the Faculty of Law moot court, Wednesday, 4th of April.

The programme organized by Abdullahi Abdulhakeem Ago — a part four student of Combined Law — who was inspired to open the eyes of his colleagues to the opportunities that abound in the legal profession, and how they can take full advantage thereof, towards becoming successful in their chosen area of specialization.

Speaking on the theme of the event, the Student Union President, Sen. Adekunbi Ademola Alexander, noted that being a law student is not the ultimate. He identified factors such as academic focus and time management, extracurricular activities, and discipline as crucial to realizing ambition or future aspirations in the legal profession.

While giving a synopsis of his lecture to our correspondent, Sen. Kunbi said: "...I spoke to them about how...primarily, why there might be a lot of hype, a lot of euphoria after having gotten into law and you're one of the black and white people on campus. But  that ultimately, that is not the most important thing. And I broke down three elements that I consider to be the most important things on campus.

"The first one is academic focus. Despite the fact that a lot of people say different things about the importance or otherwise of a law degree, we all admit our educational system is faulty. But ultimately, I explained to them that there are a lot of opportunities in life, in terms of when you want to win a scholarship, when you want to get a fellowship to this or that, requires some level of academic performance...

"They usually have some kind of benchmark and if you don't meet it, regardless of whatever skill you have in other areas, it becomes difficult to cross that hurdle. Though there might be a lot of distractions, though I'm not in a proper capacity to come and speak to them about whether or not they should party, or have a girlfriend, or whatever other things.

"The point or something I can preach about, even though I'm not perfect about it, is also time management. You know, prioritizing and understanding what to use the 24 hours in a day for.

"The second element is extracurriculars, about how in order to have a rounded personality and a rounded CV, which will enable to access more opportunities, which will enable you to participate in other things apart from academics. So I gave suggestions like JCI, like Rotaract, like UCJ, like AISEC, like Union politics. About how, as a law student, you should participate in leadership.

"I gave them the example about how, across the world, more than 40% of legislators are usually lawyers. And ultimately, lawyers being that we know the law, and the sociological environmental factors that affect society and the law, we should be at the forefront of things like that...

"The last thing was discipline. And this was hinged on the fact that, regardless of how well one excels in the academia or extracurricular activities, a single act of misconduct can result in all that being gone in the snap of the fingers. I mean, somebody is caught cheating...no matter how desperate they are to pass, or no matter how angry they are...no matter how broke they are at any point in time, the temptation to do something illegal must be resisted because, it will result in the cancellation of whatever pride...you know, drawing back to the initial element that if you want to graduate in flying colours, if you want to graduate at all, you must ensure to stay on the right side of the law at any point in time", he concluded.

A university don, Dr A.K.A Saddam, did justice to the topic, 'Unveiling the Marking Scheme'. He disclosed the nitty-gritty of the marking scheme of the law faculty to the participants. He spoke based on his wealth of experience as a law lecturer.

The third speaker, Abolarin Muhammad, who is also the President of Unilorin Debate Club, discussed the topic, 'Legal Profession: More than Just Litigation'. His discussion was full of insights on other lucrative areas that exist in the legal profession beyond litigation.

In his speech, Abolarin corrected the notion to the effect that the legal profession is all about litigation. "There's a problem with the mindset that the legal profession is tied to litigation. It's a wrong perception...", he clarified.

Muhammad also highlighted the plight of young lawyers in his lecture. He lamented bitterly about the fact that young lawyers do not enjoy adequate protection under the extant laws in Nigeria. He cited gross underpayment as one of the challenges facing young wigs in the country, and went further to do a comparative analysis between the legal systems in Nigeria and the United Kingdom as backed up by statistical data on the volume of law graduates churned out from law school each year among other sundry issues.

As a way out of the woods, the leader of the Debate Club stated that asides litigation, aspiring lawyers can also be successful by being judges, magistrates, court clerks, company secretary, arbitration, human resource managers, politicians etc. "The moment you identify your career path, start pursuing your career from your undergraduate days", he advised.

The multiple award winning speaker, concluded his lecture by quoting the words of Chief Niyi Akkntola SAN, who said that, "lawyers in Nigeria are yet to key into what is happening in the legal profession of developed countries".

The fourth speaker and Lord Advocate of Liberty Chambers, Faculty of Law (Unilorin), Jimoh Omotayo SAU, discussed the topic, "Learning the Law Beyond the Four Walls of the Class".

According to Omotayo, "five years is just too much a time to restrict yourself to what is being taught in the classroom". He further stated that "first class law students are not necessarily first class lawyers", the difference of which, according to him, lies in the application of law, not just knowing the law or where to find it.

Thus, Omotayo was of the opinion that, "in order to apply the law, you have to go beyond what is being taught in the class. The biggest law firms in Nigeria earn their income from corporate practice". He corroborated his argument with active participation in extracurricular activities like the Tax Club, Arbitration Club, Oil and Gas Club among others.

Mr 'Tayo concluded his speech saying, "the classroom will not teach you arbitration procedure...the career market is crowded, you don't have to restrict yourself to the classroom."

In a chat with our correspondent, the convener of the event, Mr Abdullahi Abdulhakeem Ago, revealed the factor that inspired him to put together such a programme, and also expressed his joy and challenges to UCJ, UNILORIN.

According to him, his major motivation was the need to get the freshmen familiar with the faculty system and the university community, as well as opening their minds to the door of opportunities that exist in the legal profession. Returning law students were not left out in the scheme of things. According to Ago, the event was also designed to make them appreciate the beauty of the legal profession.

Mr Abdullahi identified time constraints, getting approval from the faculty authority, and securing the venue for the event, as some of the challenges he encountered in the course of executing the programme.

In his opinion, Abdulhakeem believes that the objective of the programme has been achieved in the sense that, about 250 participants attended the seminar, as against the initially projected figure of 200 participants.

Dignitaries that graced the occasion were: the Student Union President, Adebisi Abimbola Ridwanullah (Reedorf); the Chief Justice of the Student Union Court, Lord Khan; the President, Law Students' Society (Unilorin), Ademu Desmond; and the Attorney General, Unilorin Student Union, Habeebullah Morakinyo Olasupo SAU.

Others include all Justices of the SU Court; all Heads of Chambers, Faculty of Law (Unilorin); Law students from Alikmah University, Ilorin; among others.

Cambridge Analytica sought to influence the Nigerian presidential election in 2015 by using graphically violent imagery to portray a candidate as a supporter of sharia law who would brutally suppress dissenters and negotiate with militant Islamists, a video passed to British MPs reveals.

The Guardian has obtained the video, which has graphic scenes of violence from Nigeria’s past. In testimony to the digital, culture, media and sport (DCMS) select committee last week, the whistleblower Christopher Wylie told MPs: “[The video was distributed] in Nigeria with the sole intent of intimidating voters. It included content where people were being dismembered, where people were having their throats cut and bled to death in a ditch. They were being burned alive. There was incredibly anti-Islamic, threatening messages portraying Muslims as violent.”

Wylie also said Cambridge Analytica directed AggregateIQ (AIQ), the Canadian digital services firm that worked for Vote Leave during Britain’s EU referendum, to target voters with the video during the Nigerian presidential campaign.

Wylie, a former Cambridge Analytica employee, has now handed the material to MPs. Giving testimony last week, he said: “Cambridge Analytica sent AggregateIQ the video after they [CA] got banned from several online ad networks because the graphic nature of the content violated the terms of service. AIQ was quite freaked out about it. It’s a very disturbing video. They told Cambridge Analytica that. They called it ‘the murder video’.”

In his testimony Wylie said: “AIQ is the firm that’s right at the heart of the official Vote Leave campaign – one-third of all leave spending went through it – and this shows them working closely with Cambridge Analytica to distribute violent, divisive Islamophobic material that should be nowhere near an election campaign.” There is no suggestion that AIQ was involved in the production of the video.

Cambridge Analytica was hired by a Nigerian billionaire to run a campaign in support of Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian, and the video was targeted at his Muslim opponent, Muhammadu Buhari, who went on to win the election. There is no suggestion that Jonathan was aware of the campaign.

The anti-Buhari video imagines a future in which he is president and sharia law has been imposed. “Coming to Nigeria on February 15th 2015,” the voiceover says in the manner of a trailer for a Hollywood movie. “Dark. Scary. And very uncertain. Sharia for all.” It poses the question: “What would Nigeria look like if sharia were imposed by Buhari?” It suggests he would strike a deal with the Islamist militant group Boko Haram that would be “a pact with the devil”. The video also suggests “Buhari will punish all who speak against the regime” and that “women will be veiled”. It ends by saying: “You can stop this movie becoming real.”

Another former Cambridge Analytica employee who worked on the campaign said: “It was voter suppression of the most crude and basic kind. It was targeted at Buhari voters in Buhari regions to basically scare the shit out of them and stop them from voting. People were working on it in Cambridge Analytica’s office. They’d be sitting there eating their lunch and editing this incredibly graphic and disturbing material.”The video will be seen as further evidence of dirty tricks that Cambridge Analytica employed in the campaign. Last month the Guardian revealed that during the Nigerian election campaign Cambridge Analytica was offered material from Israeli hackers who had accessed private email accounts of two politicians there.

Former Cambridge Analytica employees described how the hackers passed a thumb drive of hacked material relating to Buhari to them in Cambridge Analytica’s offices and they were directed by Alexander Nix, its chief executive, and Brittany Kaiser, a senior director, to search Buhari’s personal emails for compromising material that could be used to smear him. The material included private medical information that employees say was leaked to the press.

The video separately demonstrates the ties between Cambridge Analytica and AggregateIQ, the firm that its parent company SCL Elections employed. Last week the DCMS committee published documents that link Cambridge Analytica and SCL Elections with AIQ, including a contract, a service agreement and an intellectual property agreement that was first revealed in the Observer a year ago.

AggregateIQ is part of a current Electoral Commission investigation into a donation of £625,000 that Vote Leave made to a youth outreach group, BeLeave, which was paid directly to the Canadian firm and it is the focus of allegations made by a second whistleblower, Shahmir Sanni.
AggregateIQ did not respond to previous Guardian inquiries about the video, but said: “AIQ provides digital advertising, web and software development services to third parties. It is completely independent of Mr Wylie, CA and SCL.”

It added: “AIQ is and has always been 100% Canadian owned and operated … the services it provided to Vote Leave were in accordance with instructions given by Vote Leave.” There is no suggestion that AggregateIQ unethically coordinated with Cambridge Analytica on the EU referendum campaign.

A Cambridge Analytica spokesman said: “You are referring to Chris Wylie’s comments before a select committee which included speculation and a serious misrepresentation of the facts. We are, however, taking all allegations about possible unethical practices in the past very seriously and will investigate.”

The University of Ibadan has justified the rationale for the fees increments by the university management, in a message which went viral on social media.

In a statement released by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, he said, "at a point where it is difficult to continue to subside the running of the Halls of Residence and carry out some academic functions without a slight adjustment in accommodation charges and in some fee items payable by students in some faculties.   In adjusting the fees, members of the public are to note that it is only the increase in accommodation fees that cuts across students who desire to stay in the Halls of Residence. It should also be noted that residency in the Halls of Residence is optional, and indeed, only about 30% of our students can find accommodation in the Halls of Residence. It is also important to note that the Federal Government, many years back, had stopped providing funds for the running of the Halls. As a result, the University spends about 100 Million Naira over what is collected as accommodation fees, for the running of the Halls. The University is no longer in a position to continue to provide this subsidy. "

He added that, the University has also been very objective in adjusting some other fee items. According to him, the fees were only adjusted for students in the Faculties of Arts,  Agriculture,  Renewable Natural Resources,  and Pharmacy. Even in these faculties, the fees are limited to categories of students requiring the academic service for which an increase has been approved."

He further stated that, only 400 level students in the Faculties of Agriculture, and Renewable Natural Resources are to pay additional 2,500 Naira for the entre session, which include students in their practical year, stating that, other students in these two Faculties are not to pay these fees. "In the Faculty of Arts also, only 200 and 300 level students in six departments are to pay the Studio Maintenance fees. Students in Departments without studios are exempted from this fee," he added.

According to the Vice Chancellor, fees payable by students in the Faculties of the Social Sciences, Law, Education, Science, and Technology have not been adjusted for the coming session.  Also, students in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine who are to handle animals would be required to obtain Immunization card in order to ensure safety.
