Bayern recall Starke from retirement to replace injured Neuer

Tom Starke was called up to Bayern Munich‘s Champions League squad following the injury to first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

The 36-year-old finished his playing career at the end of the 2016/17 season, but he remained at the Bavarian club to train during pre-season, making an appearance on the club’s Asian Tour.

But now Carlo Ancelotti has been forced into taking drastic measures after current backup Sven Ulreich’s error-filled performance in a 2-2 draw against Wolfsburg at the weekend.

Starke is permitted by Uefa rules which allow for goalkeepers to be added or removed from a club’s Champions League squad. Howevre, the same does not apply for outfield players.

Starke made three appearances in the Bundesliga last season, all of which came in the last three games of the season, but managed to keep just one clean sheet and conceded four against RB Leipzig.
