UPDATE: NUESA SRC IMPEACH DIRECTOR OF FINANCE FOR ALLEGEDLY SIPHONING 109 THOUSAND NAIRA

The Director of Finance of the National Universities Education Students' Association (NUESA), Comrade Alaga Sodiq. O, was impeached on Tuesday, 11th of July 2017, for allegedly siphoning the sum of 109 thousand naira, the money realised from NUESA Interdepartmental Dance IV, earlier this semester.

The impeachment, which was presided over by the Honourable Speaker of NUESA, Rt.Hon Ogedengbe Olumuyiwa, on the floor of NUESA Representative Council emergency sitting, was in consonance with the recommendations made by the NUESA Judicial Council, after thorough investigations had been carried out.

Comrade Alaga Sodiq. O, was accused of not remitting the money into the association's bank account and he was summoned several times for questioning of which his attitude, as described by the Speaker, was nonchalant. He later showed up on Friday, 16th of June 2017, and made a written declaration to refund the money on Monday, 19th of June 2017, which he didn't.

Consequently, a 5-count charge allegation was levelled against him, viz. disobedience, dishonesty, embezzlement, engagement in fraudulent activities, and violation of oat of allegiance. He was equally suspended for 7 working days.

It then became necessary for the constitutional involvement of NUESA Judicial Council and after thorough investigations, it was discovered that the comrade has been facing some personal problems and has not been in the right state of mind. Hence, his impeachment was recommended with immediate effect.

The recommendations state, "...Being guilty or not of the 5-count charge as requested should be set aside and the officer should be impeached with immediate effect based on the fact that the officer has not been in the right state of mind which has hindered him from discharging his conditional and administrative duties...".

The speaker then appointed the Deputy Director General, comrade Steven Olabode, to take charge of the office.

The emergency sitting had in attendance the speaker; Rt.Hon Ogedengbe Olumuyiwa, the deputy speaker; Rt.Hon Fatokun Emmanuel, the clerk; Rt.Hon Oladimeji Solomon, the chief whip; Hon. Badmus Ibrahim, the chief judge; Justice Saheed Ridwan. A, other honourable members, and observers of the faculty. Other issues raised during the sitting were; renumeration of honorable members, electoral proceedings of Independent NUESA Electoral Commission (INEC), Teaching Practice (TP) levy for 300level students, etc.
