Court sentences policemen to death for robbery

An Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure, sentenced two policemen, Henry Ubogu and Emmanuel Moses, to death by hanging, having found them guilty of armed robbery.

It was gathered that the duo, who were attached to the Ondo State Police Command, had earlier been sacked by the command before their arraignment.

The convicted cops were said to be involved in robbing motorists at gunpoint while on illegal checkpoints in the state.

The convicts were arrested in 2010 after snatching a Toyota Camry car belonging to one Victor Ojo in Akure. They had pretended to be on a stop-and-search operation.

After snatching the car, they reportedly fled the scene. It was also learnt that the reckless manner in which they drove after the robbery raised the suspicion of a patrol team who then gave them a hot pursuit.
