Hoops Are New Chokers This Summer

Chokers might have been last summer’s go-to accessory, but they’ve been quickly replaced by hoop earrings.

Make no mistake, while hoops are enjoying a resurgence, they’ve never really gone out of style.

The earrings were popular as far back as ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia; in 2015, archeologists in Israel discovered one example that’s nearly 3,200 years old.

Much more recently, the style has been taken up by celebrities including Sade, who made slicked-back hair and thick gold hoops her signature.

And who can forget Jennifer Lopez? The entertainer has been perpetually sporting jumbo hoops throughout her whole career.

And then there’s Salt-N-Pepa, who brought door knockers to the stage in the late ’80s and early ’90s. And now? Just yesterday, Rihanna wore a pair of fist-size rhinestone-bedazzled hoops in Barbados to go with her sparkling, celebratory getup.

Also, during these hot days, Emily Ratajkowski has been showing off her gilded earrings by way of a loose topknot, while Bella Hadid prefers a slicked-back ballerina bun to cameo her hoops. Zendaya herself has gone the XXL route.
