Union Bank of Nigeria Plc has challenged the permanent forfeiture of a property known as Flat 7b No 16, Osborne Road Ikoyi, Lagos to the Federal Government.

The property was the same one linked to the dismissed Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ayo Oke where the EFCC recovered the sums of $43,449,947.00, €27,800 and N23,218,000.00 on the 12th of April, 2017.

At the Federal High Court Sitting in Lagos on Thursday, Union Bank laid claims to the flat and the building which it says came into its possession following a mortgage agreement between the bank, the original owner of the property, former PDP Chairman, Adamu Muazu and Tripple A Properties Investment Ltd.

Tripple A which is believed to be owned by Mr Muazu had allegedly used the property to secure a loan from the Union Bank sometime in 2011.

A former President, Christian Association of Nigeria, Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, has asked the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari why life is becoming harder for Nigerians after it promised them change.

The former Catholic Archbishop of Lagos asked the question in a piece entitled, ‘The Truth and Nothing But the Truth,’ which was sent to The PUNCH _on Tuesday.

Okogie said 2018 was just a few days away but on the horizon of Nigerian politicians, it seemed 2019 would come before 2018. He said by their speeches, conduct and posture, “even the blind are able to see that preparations for the 2019 elections are already in top gear.”

The outspoken cleric, however, decried that in utter disregard to internal party democracy, candidates and sole candidates were already being endorsed, a development he pointed out did not portray politicians in good light. “With very few exceptions, they are powermongers pretending to be leaders, parasites posturing as benefactors,” he stated.

President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to reports of the slave auction in Libya describing it as appalling and unacceptable. The president said efforts have commenced bringing back home to Nigeria, victims who are stranded in Libya or any other country and also rehabilitated.

Using his official Twitter handle on Wednesday, to react to the reports of migrants being traded in action in Libya, the President said everything will be done to protect Nigerian citizens wherever they are.

Buhari also speaking in Abidjan on Tuesday night reacted to the increased rate of illegal migration in Nigeria. Buhari reacting to a viral video on the sale of Africans in Libya, President Buhari said it is appalling that “some Nigerians (in the footage) where being sold like goats for few dollars in Libya.’’

“After 43 years of Gadhafi, why are they recruiting so many people from the Sahel including Nigerians? All they learned was how to shoot and kill. They didn’t learn to be electricians, plumbers or any other trade,’’ he said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused the US of seeking to provoke North Korea into stepping up its nuclear missile programme.

He rejected a call by the American envoy to the UN Security Council to sever ties with the North after its latest ballistic missile test.

Speaking on a visit to the Belarussian capital Minsk, Mr Lavrov asked whether America was actively seeking to destroy North Korea. "One gets the impression that everything has been done on purpose to make Kim Jong-un snap and carry out further inadvisable actions," he said. The Americans, he said, "should explain to us all what they're after".

"If they want to find a pretext for destroying North Korea, as the US envoy said at the UN Security Council, then let them say it outright and let the supreme American leadership confirm it."

Calling for new talks with North Korea, Mr Lavrov added: "We have already emphasised several times that the squeeze of sanctions has essentially come to an end, and that those resolutions which introduced the sanctions should have included a requirement to renew the political process, a requirement to renew talks. "But the Americans completely ignore this requirement and I consider this a big mistake."

Arsene Wenger is not expecting Jose Mourinho's Manchester United to 'park the bus' when they take on Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday.

Both teams go into the game on the back of three successive Premier League victories, with United sitting four points and two places above Arsenal in the table.

United are looking for their first win in eight attempts against top-six opposition under Mourinho, having drawn three and lost four of their previous seven while scoring just once.

But Wenger is not expecting his counterpart to adopt a negative approach against the Gunners.

When asked if he expects Mourinho to 'park the bus', Wenger replied: "No, I don't expect anything special. I just expect us to be ready to recover now.

"Man Utd is a strong team and I expect us just to cope with the problems they will give us. They will attack as well. They will not only defend."

It looks like President Trump's Wednesday and Thursday morning have left him feeling very defensive of his actions, so much so that he's targeted the NYT, Democrats and Theresa May for his actions the previous day. Apart from this, he's also constantly touting the tax cuts law and the amazing economy under his rule.

🐦 Departing JBA_NAFW for St. Charles, Missouri to help push our plan for HISTORIC TAX CUTS across the finish line. A successful vote in the Senate this week will bring us one giant step closer to delivering an incredible victory for the American people!

🐦 This week, the Senate can join the House & take a strong stand for the Middle Class families who are the backbone of America. Together, we will give the American people a big, beautiful Christmas present-a massive tax cut that lets Americans keep more of their HARD-EARNED MONEY!

The Senate has passed a procedural vote on the tax bill that allows debate to begin on the measure with a final vote expected late Thursday or Friday. The procedural vote passed 52-48.

🐦 A vote to CUT TAXES is a vote to PUT AMERICA FIRST. It is time to take care of OUR WORKERS, to protect OUR COMMUNITIES, and to REBUILD OUR GREAT COUNTRY!

🐦 Now, we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to RESTORE AMERICAN PROSPERITY – and RECLAIM AMERICA’S DESTINY.

🐦Theresa_May, dont focus on me, focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom. We are doing just fine!

Donald Trump has hit back at Theresa May’s criticism of his decision to retweet far-right group Britain First. Trump appeared to have tagged the wrong user in his message, however. He later re-posted the tweet, tagging theresa_may instead.

🐦 The House of Representatives seeks contempt citations(?) against the JusticeDepartment and the FBI for withholding key documents and an FBI witness which could shed light on surveillance of associates of Donald Trump. Big stuff. Deep State. Give this information NOW! FoxNews

The tweet attacks the FBI, a thorn in Trump’s side since the investigation into his campaign’s collusion with Russia to “win” the election last year. It also it harks back to Trump’s unfounded claims that the Obama administration had his “wires tapped” during the campaign, although this time he is only claiming that his “associates” were surveilled.

🐦 The only people who don’t like the Tax Cut Bill are the people that don’t understand it or the Obstructionist Democrats that know how really good it is and do not want the credit and success to go to the Republicans!

Democrats have raised concerns that the bill — which would cut the corporate tax rate to 20 percent, double the standard deduction and add an estimated $1.4 trillion to the deficit over a decade, among other things — would disproportionately benefit the wealthy.

Pep Guardiola has apologised for his frenzied reaction to Manchester City's late winner against Southampton.

Raheem Sterling curled a brilliant effort home in the 96th minute, strengthening City's grip on top spot in the Premier League.

The club now lead city rivals Manchester United by eight points, winning 13 of their 14 games thus far this season and drawing one.

Guardiola celebrated the goal by running onto the pitch, and has now made sure to apologise after allowing his emotions to run away from him.

“I said ‘I apologise’ because I couldn’t control it,” said Guardiola. “I was so happy. I ran after Raheem but I’m not quick enough, but we were so happy.”

Guardiola was filmed haranguing Southampton star Nathan Redmond after the match in a bizarre altercation, but Guardiola says he was merely praising the 23-year-old's talents.

An urgent evacuation plan has been devised for migrants facing abuse in Libyan detention camps. It was drawn up at an African Union-European Union summit in Ivory Coast.

The migrants will be sent mainly back to their home countries. The move follows the publication of video footage that appeared to show migrants from sub-Saharan Africa being sold in Libya as slaves. French President Emmanuel Macron called the slave auctions a "crime against humanity".

Nigeria and Libya will expect to face growing pressure from their counterparts in the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries to end their exemption from production cuts and accept an output quota, when ministers meet on Thursday (today) for a closely watched summit.

The production cuts deal, which began on January 1 and called on OPEC countries and 10 non-OPEC producers led by Russia to cut a combined 1.8 million barrels per day in supplies, was in May extended by nine months to March 2018.

Nigeria and Libya, which were exempt from the cuts as they dealt with internal unrest that had targeted their oil infrastructure, have ramped up oil production in recent months as their security situations have improved.

While the production outlooks for both countries remain hazy due to political, security and technical challenges, voices had been growing louder within OPEC that their output has recovered sufficiently to join in their market rebalancing efforts, sources told S&P Global Platts.

Scientists studying nine samples – including hair and teeth – supposedly from yetis, say the samples are not from a huge hominin but in fact mostly belonged to bears.

Just one sample, taken from a curious stuffed “yeti”, bucked the trend – the creature turned out to be a taxidermy mash-up boasting the hair of a bear and the teeth of a dog.

“It demonstrates that modern science can really try and tackle some of these mysteries and unsolved questions that we have,” said Dr Charlotte Lindqvist, an expert on bear genomics and co-author of the research from the University at Buffalo. The study is not the first time it has been suggested that the yeti might be more ursine than abominable.

A recent study, based on genetic analysis from samples purportedly from yeti-like creatures the world over, found that while most of the samples came from known animals, two from Bhutan and the Indian Himalayas were more mysterious.

The team suggested they might be from an unknown species of bear or a descendant of a hybrid of a polar and brown bear.

The General Secretary, Textile Union Workers, Mr Isa Aremu, said the 2019 election would be determined by the dignity of labour and commitment in payment of workers’ salary.

Aremu said this in an interview in response to government’s plan to raise workers’ salary after negotiation by the newly inaugurated 30-member committee on new minimum wage.

According to him, governors who refuse to pay the salary of workers as and when due and those who criminalise workers on account of deficiency in skill will not get workers’ votes.

He added that labour would be partisan and political in its interest, based on those who paid salary.

“Dignity of labour will not be ensured if workers are not paid when due. Workers have the right to employment,” he added. The general secretary said labour would conduct competence test for governors with a view to judging them based on their indices.

The tomb in which Jesus Christ may have been buried dates back nearly 1,700 years, scientists have discovered.

Tests carried out on the remains of a limestone cave in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, in Jerusalem, date it back to around 345 CE, National Geographic reported. Previous evidence had only dated the tomb back 1,000 years, to the Crusader period.

Although it’s impossible to definitively say whether the tomb is the burial site of a Jew known as Jesus of Nazareth, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is largely accepted as the site of Christ's burial.

The research, carried out by the National Technical University of Athens, does not offer further evidence as to whether Jesus was actually buried in the tomb, but it is consistent with the historical belief that the ancient Romans constructed a monument at the site around 300 years after his death.

The New Testament says Jesus died either in 30 or 33 CE, but historical accounts suggest the Romans found and enshrined the tomb in 326 CE.

Following several ‘save our soul’ messages from Nigerian migrants stranded in Libya, the Federal Government has responded to the maltreatment of its citizen in the country.

Nigerians numbering 242 from Libya were returned to the country on Tuesday evening. The returnees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Lagos on Libyan Airline plane.

A recording artist, Nikki Laoye, was at the airport along with officials of National Emergency Management Agency, International Organization of Migration and National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons to receive the Libyan returnees.

The Federal Government had on Monday, promised to intervene and rescue Nigerian migrants in the North African country. In a statement, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said it was liaising with the Libyan officials on repatriating Nigerians from the country.

The ministry said that the mission in Libya had addressed kidnapping of Nigerians for ransom by foreigners, adding that other cases involving Nigerians who kidnapped their compatriots for ransom in Libya were equally reported to the embassy for intervention.

In a massive punch to Flat-earthers and the flat-earth theory, Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson shared an image of a moon with a horizontal shadow over it. The caption states: “A Lunar Eclipse flat-earthers have never seen.”

Here, he allows the photo speak for itself. The primary claim in flat Earth theory, of course, is that it is flat.

During a typical lunar eclipse, we look to the sky to see the moon go entirely dark a consequence of the Earth’s shadow obstructing light from the sun from approaching the moon. This is likely because the Earth is both round and massive.

If the Earth were flat, the shadow it would cast on the moon’s surface when it got among the Sun and the moon would, in turn, look flat, as it does in Tyson’s photo. This, apparently, is never going to occur.

Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, or the Alma telescope, the researchers spotted signs of as many as 11 low-mass stars forming near supermassive black hole Sagittarius A*, according to a release from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.

These early-stage stars or protostars are nearly 6,000 years old and are in the formative stage – a phase in which they are no more a dense cloud of dust and gas but are yet to transform into a shining, young star.

Extremely turbulent environments and intense radiation from black holes like this are capable of disrupting the star formation process.

However, the presence of these protostars suggests that the conditions required for star formation may exist even in some of the hostile regions of our galaxy and universe.

"This is a genuinely surprising result and one that demonstrates just how robust star formation can be, even in the most unlikely of places." Though it is still unclear how these stars are forming, astronomers speculate that outside forces like high-velocity gas clouds or jets from the black hole itself could have helped in overcoming the violent nature of the region and triggering the star formation.

Two US citizens are being held in Thailand after they posted an online picture of themselves posing with their buttocks exposed at a temple.

The tourists had taken the picture at Bangkok's famous Wat Arun temple and posted it on Twitter and Instagram. Immigration authorities told the BBC the pair, Joseph and Travis Dasilva, both 38, would be fined and deported.

Thailand has very strict laws on behaviour considered disrespectful and offensive to its Buddhist religion. The two tourists were held late on Tuesday when trying to leave the country at Bangkok's Don Mueang airport.

They will also be blacklisted from coming back to Thailand. The two were brought to Bangkok Yai police station to be charged with public nakedness, an offence liable for a fine of up to 5,000 baht ($153; £115). However, Thai government and police officials have told media that the charges could be more serious.

South Sudan has ended the use of CE, EE, SSJS, UNS, WS and NBGS number plates and unveiled a new series. The country has launched the new series of nationalised country code SSD, the National Transport and Safety Authority announced on Wednesday.

These will be the only numbers the country will recognise after registration from December 13. "All parties concerned should ensure they acquire the new number plates from the Southern Sudan government before the deadline," the notice read.

On November 7, NTSA outlawed car registration series banned in South Sudan. The country had varied registration codes from 2005 to March when the government introduced a unified country code.

Barcelona have targeted Chelsea star Willian as an alternative should they fail in their attempts to sign Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool, as per reports.

The Catalan side saw their approaches for Coutinho knocked back by Liverpool in the summer as the Anfield side demanded €200 million for him.

The 25-year-old, however, handed in a transfer request to the Anfield club and Barca are expected to return for him in January.

Willian, 29, and Coutinho share an agent in Giuliano Bertolucci, who played a key role in negotiating Paulinho's move from Guangzhou Evergrande, and the Camp Nou outfit are hoping he can help deliver at least one of their top options.

Willian has been in and out of Antonio Conte's starting XI this season, but has scored four goals in 20 appearances across all competitions.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, had said Nigerian roads were not as bad as many people were claiming; rather, he stated that the roads needed to be adequately maintained.

He, however, noted that some of the roads had outlived their design life, some still within their design life, while others were being built.

Fashola stated these in his keynote address at the United Nations-sponsored capacity building programme for the Federal Road Safety Corps, which was made available to our correspondent in Abuja by his ministry.

He said roads that had outlived their design life should have been replaced and rebuilt, but they had not, and named the Calabar-Itu-Odukpani road as falling within this category.

The minister stated, “They were built in the 1970s, and not only have they outlived their design life, they have had to deal with tonnage and capacities well beyond what their design intended. Can such a road be truly expected to stay intact and deliver a pleasant motoring experience?

Everton have hired Sam Allardyce as manager, ending a prolonged search following the October sacking of Ronald Koeman.

The Toffees announced that Allardyce will finalise terms at the club's USM Finch Farm training ground on Wednesday. Caretaker manager David Unsworth will remain in charge for Everton's match against West Ham on Wednesday night at Goodison Park.

Allardyce is returning to management six months after resigning from his post at Crystal Palace, having said at the time that he had "no ambitions to take another job."

But the former West Ham, Sunderland and England manager had an apparent change of heart, openly expressing interest in the United States job in recent weeks before ultimately taking over at Goodison Park.

The news comes after Everton failed in their attempts to hire Watford manager Marco Silva, with Shakhtar Donetsk's Paulo Fonseca and Ireland's Martin O'Neill among the names also linked to the job.

Pope Francis visit to Myanmar was planned well before the Rohingya refugee crisis erupted in August.

The visit was intended to upgrade diplomatic ties between the Holy See and Myanmar, and to enhance the status of the small Roman Catholic community in the country, many of whom come from other vulnerable minorities.

The Pope was visiting as much as a diplomat and statesman as he was a moral leader. In the end, he let pragmatic considerations prevail over the expectation that he speak out against the treatment of Rohingya. His Keynote speech was delivered in Naypyitaw, the new capital that was hewn out of the bush by a paranoid military regime a decade ago and is still the seat of power in Myanmar.

It was easy to spot the thinly-veiled references to the plight of the Rohingya; the need to "ensure respect for the rights of all who call this land their home", to build a democratic order which "enables each individual and every group - none excluded - to offer its legitimate contribution".

But by avoiding the name Rohingya, Pope Francis headed off an angry reaction from hard-line Buddhist nationalists, and any embarrassment for Aung San Suu Kyi, who hosted him in Naypyitaw.

The lawmaker representing Abia South Senatorial District, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, has described the 2018 Appropriation Bill presented to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari, as fictitious.

The debate on the 2018 budget proposal started on a dramatic note at the plenary on Tuesday when the first speaker, Abaribe, dismissed the 2018 budget proposal as “fictitious.” The Majority Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan, however, retorted by raising a point of order to fault Abaribe for describing a bill presented by President Muhammadu Buhari as “fictitious.” Lawan urged the lawmaker to withdraw the word “fictitious” and use another word that was “parliamentary and acceptable.”

Withdrawing the word, Abaribe, however, insisted on his position, saying, “I am just quoting the Senate Leader from his speech, which said in the 2018 budget was designed to consolidate on the achievements of the 2016 and 2017 budgets. What was done in 2017 when less than 15 percent of that budget was released. Nothing was done and that was why I called it (2018 budget proposal) fictitious.”

Tomori Uriel,

The Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), has charged university of Ilorin to be the first digitalized university in Nigeria.

Mr. Amadi, the Telecommunication expert, in his lecture said,  "The world has gone from analog to digital, and we want Unilorin to became the first smart (digital) university in Nigeria."

He stated that, the goal of NCC is to make Nigeria a digitalized country, adding that the conventional meaning of illiteracy has gone beyond the ability to read and write, to ones ability to operate digital technology and emerging technology.

In his lecture, he stated the 2017 "key drive" for NCC to be; To tell customers the quality of service NCC delivers, to educate customers on the effect of electromagnetic field, to introduce a new service code DND and to educate customers on how to contact the NCC service line for complain.

He stated that, texting STOP to the Do Not Disturb code (DND 2442) will cancel all unsolicited messages on a network provider, and customers can reach NCC via 622.

Amadi reported that, Base Transceiver Stations (Mast) does not cause any harm to human health.

According to him, this findings has been confirmed by various researches by WHO (www.who.factsheet/emf) and International Commission on Non Ionised Radiation Protection (ICNRIP.org).

He further stated that, the protection of telecommunication infrastructure must be protect by consumers for quality service deliveries, as NCC is committed to checking the excess of all network providers in the country, through sanctions and other means.

The Ibadan Zonal Controller of the Commission, Olubunmi Bamijoko, said the commission recognises customers as the king and the aim of NCC is to enlighten customers.

He said, "It is our duty to provide relevant information to customers."

According to the representative of the Vice Chancellor, DVC Academics, Prof. NYS Ijaya, said this is a forum many of us have been looking forward to.

The Registrar, in his closing remark, reported that, initially we taught one network was doing well than another, but we discovered all are doing well.

He further, appreciated everyone present at the event, stating that, "We hope all promises made will be met, so you cab serve Us Better."

Kareem Zainab,

Registrar/Chief Executive of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, has bagged the ‘Most outstanding Public Servant of the Year Award’, in recognition of his outstanding contributions towards efficient service delivery in the education sub-sector by The New Telegraph.
newspaper.

Ever since Prof. Oloyede took over the mantle of leadership at the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in August 2016, the Board has always been in the media for the right reasons, it has been from one success story to the order.

He has sustained the acclaimed efficiency and service delivery, which made some people see the Board as the most efficient Public organization in Nigeria in the recent past.

In line with the Federal government’s policy of zero tolerance for corruption and diversifying the nation’s economy, the Board under Prof. Oloyede has blazed several trails.

Recently, the Board which hitherto was seen as a non-revenue generating agency that depends on federal government subvention for its sustenance, remitted a whopping 5.2b to the coffers of the federation, with a promise that another 3b will follow before the end of the year, bringing the total to 8b.

He has been on top of so many transformations in the Board with the recent been the overhaul of the 2018 registration process where a candidate will need not go through the tedious process of last year profile creation but simply sent a text containing his/her surname first name and middle name where applicable with his/her phone to a code to be disclosed in an advert to be realised soon and his profile is created.

These are unprecedented in the history of public service in Nigeria and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in
particular. This feats were only achieved due to the integrity, credibility, accountability and transparency of Prof. Oloyede.

Prof. Ishaq Olanrewaju Oloyede has demonstrated to the whole world that men of integrity and unalloyed patriotism still abound in Nigeria, he has demonstrated that one could serve in the public service with the sole aim of service and taking his organization to the next pedestal.

This explains why his achievements should be celebrated for generations to see for possible adoption and peer review by even sister organisations or governments.

Scientists have recently observed humpback male dolphins in the region presenting females with large marine sponges in the hope of impressing them.

They also observed male humpback dolphins acting as "wingmen" for each other-- this type of male cooperation is unusual in dolphins given that paternity can't be shared.
This is the first time this level of social complexity has been observed in dolphins.

There are three possible reasons for this behavior, he said: "It's gift giving, it's a signal of his fitness (so) quality as a mate, or it's a threat to coerce her into mating with him."

Some male dolphins even adopt the "banana pose," whereby a big male will lie at the water surface with his head and tail arched up -- almost as if he is flexing his muscles.

Previous research conducted on the bottle-nose dolphins of Shark Bay indicates "these male alliances are generally very tight units, and even when they are following a female, they spend most of their time petting and touching each other, reinforcing that love is love, no matter what the sex or the species," said Allen.

Embattled former chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Mr Abdulrasheed Maina, has finally broken silence on the allegations of corruption levelled against him.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Channels Television which aired during News At 10 on Monday, Mr Maina insisted that he was innocent of the allegations preferred against him.

He, however, appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to give him an opportunity to prove his innocence, claiming that the President was being deceived by the people who surround him.

Zimbabwe has officially declared 21 February to be Robert Gabriel Mugabe National Youth Day, thereby making the former president's birthday a public holiday, the Herald newspaper reports.

New President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to form a cabinet this week. Mr Mugabe resigned last week after a military intervention and days of mass protests.

Calls for the former president's birthday to be made a national holiday were adopted by the government in August, following intense lobbying by the Zanu-PF Youth League, the Herald reports. The decision was officially recorded on Friday, it adds.

Former CIA and National Security Agency Director Michael Hayden criticized President Donald Trump's attack of CNN over the weekend, saying he could not believe a President was capable of "such an outrageous assault" on a free press or the First Amendment.

The retired United States Air Force four-star general, who is now is a CNN national security analyst, served under the past three administrations. "If this is who we are or who we are becoming, I have wasted 40 years of my life," Hayden tweeted over the weekend. "Until now it was not possible for me to conceive of an American President capable of such an outrageous assault on truth, a free press or the first amendment."

Trump tweeted his approval of Fox News and condemnation for CNN International Saturday, saying the network poorly represents the nation and is untrustworthy to the outside world.

"Fox News is MUCH more important in the United States than CNN, but outside of the U.S., CNN International is still a major source of (Fake) news, and they represent our Nation to the WORLD very poorly," the President said.

Just two weeks after announcing his retirement from international duty, legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon had admitted he could play for the Italy national team again.

Buffon bid a tearful farewell to the Azzurri on November 13, just minutes after Italy fell to Sweden in a two-leg playoff and failed to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1958.

The 39-year-old has now admitted he could return for Italy at some point.

"I took a break from the national team," Buffon said at the Gran Gala del Calcio in Milan on Monday. "Both for Juventus and for the national team I have always considered myself a soldier. Even when I'm 60 I could never turn down any call because I have in me the concept of nation."

The glow from a ring of incandescent red lava in the crater of Bali’s Mount Agung is clearly visible, as the likelihood of a large eruption on the popular holiday island continues to grow.

The burnt orange glow atop Mount Agung could be easily seen at night and in the thick ash column that Indonesia’s disaster agency said was being sent nearly two miles (3km) into the atmosphere.

“We could see the magma tonight,” Nyoman Karyiarsa, a resident of Rendang village, told the Guardian on Monday evening. “From 7 pm to 8 pm, we could see a bright red colour from the crater, but it hasn’t come out yet.” The Rendang monitoring post registered powerful and continuous tremors at about 2 pm on Tuesday in Bali, with locals and journalists told to evacuate. The last big eruption in 1963 was preceded by continuous tremors.

About 100,000 people in 22 villages within a six-mile red zone around the volcano have been told to leave immediately.

North Korea has fired a ballistic missile, South Korean media say, quoting military officials.

The news was confirmed by a US government source, according to Reuters news agency.

South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that the missile flew eastward from Pyongsong in South Pyongan province.

It is not clear how far it went or whether it flew over Japan as other missiles did earlier this year.
North Korea has test fired several other missiles this year, including its first intercontinental ballistic missiles, as tensions increase over its nuclear programme.

South Korean and US authorities are working together to analyse the latest missile's trajectory, according to a statement from South Korean military chiefs. It is unclear what range it had.
