Mugabe Refuses to Quit in Addresses the Nation

President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe just concluded an address to the nation.

In a defiant speech, he acknowledged the concerns raised, but did not quit or resign.

Earlier in the day, his party the Zanu-PF had voted to remove him as its leader and demanded that he resign as President by tomorrow.

Mugabe, it would appear, has different plans.

At his address to the nation he was flanked by leaders of Zimbabwe security forces, as well as his priest, Father Fidelis Mukonori.

Mugabe said that all issues would be hashed out at next month's Zanu-PF Congress that he would preside over. It is not clear how he can do this, given the party voted him out earlier today.

It is not clear if Mugabe has struck a deal with the army for a transition arrangement.

It was believed earlier today, that a deal had been secured for Mugabe's resignation. With this address, Zimbabwe politics has been thrown back into turmoil.
