An object found by a US Navy plane looking for a missing Argentine navy submarine turned out not to be the vessel, dashing hopes that it may have finally been found.
The object was detected during a search flight over the South Atlantic near where the submarine - which had 44 crew members on board - had sent its last signal eight days ago.
A spokeswoman for the US Embassy in Argentina has said the object was not the missing ARA San Juan. Before it was confirmed, the crew on board the P-8A Poseidon search aircraft had stressed that the mysterious object could not be positively identified.
The submarine went missing on November 15, sparking a massive search involving dozens of Argentine and foreign boats and planes. The search has entered a critical stage as the submarine only has seven days' oxygen supply if it is unable to surface, meaning it would be due to run out.
